A vehicle boot lid, bonnet or the like carried by a horizontally pivoted hinge arm 22 is counterbalanced by a torsion bar 25, 27 extending substantially in line with or parallel to the hinge axis and having a cranked end substantially at right angles to the axis and anchored to the arm. Adjacent to the cranked end the bar may engage with a stationary cam track 31 to vary the torque applied to the arm: a roller 32 may be provided on the bar to follow the track. Recesses may be formed in the track to hold the lid in the open and closed positions.
