Abstract

1,086,385. Torsion bar hinges. ALEXANDER SQUIRE Ltd. July 13, 1964 [July 13, 1963], No. 27868/63. Heading E2F. A torsion bar controlled hinge for a vehicle bonnet or boot lid comprises a channel section arm 10, adapted to carry the closure member, pivoted at 12 to stationary bracket 13, a torsion bar 18 attached to the arm 10 at 22 and to the stationary bracket 13 by engagement with slots 25 as shown in Fig. 1, and a spring loaded roller 27 co-operating with a cam surface 3-1 engaging indents to hold the closure member in various open positions. Alternative means for holding the closure member in various positions may consist of a projection of the arm 10 engaging with cam surface on the bracket or the torsion bar engaging the cam surface directly or through a roller. In all the above embodiments the shape of the cam surface is such that the resistance to movement of the bonnet or lid varies for different positions ,of the hinge arm relative to the bracket.
