Abstract

871,146. Door counterbalancing devices; hinges and pivots. WILMOT-BREEDEN Ltd. Dec. 20, 1957 [Dec. 31, 1956], No. 39585/56. Classes 65(1) and 65(2). A torsion spring loaded hinge, particularly for a vehicle boot lid, comprises a hinge arm 11 pivoted at 12 to a bracket 18 and a torsion bar 24 anchored at its end remote from the hinge arm and having a cranked portion 27 which makes direct contact with the hinge arm, the reaction point of the arm travelling along the portion 27 during opening or closing movement and thereby varying the torque output of the torsion bar. The arm carries a roller 29 for engagement with the bar, a second roller 32 also being provided if desired. The bracket 18 has a flange 19 with a slot 25 forming a bearing for the bar. The end of the portion 27 of the bar is bent to form a tail 27a which bears against the roller 29 when the lid is fully open.
