Abstract

Carbon dioxide is removed from a gas, or gas mixture, by washing with an aqueous solution of a basic alkali metal compound and a neutral amino-carboxylic or -sulphonic acid the atomic ratio of alkali metal to amino-acid nitrogen being from 1 : 1.5 to 1 : 2.5, preferably 1 : 2. Neutral amino acids are those which contain an equal number of amino and acid groups in their molecules e.g. glycine, N,N-dimethylglycine and N-methyl taurine. Potassium compounds are preferred, the hydroxide and carbonate being specified. In the example a solution of N-methyl-a -alanine and potassium oxide, in a ratio of 2 : 1, is used to absorb carbon dioxide and the amount absorbed compared with those obtained by other solutions in which the ratios vary from 1 : 0.416 to 1 : 1. The carbon dioxide may be obtained from the solution by desorption with vapour. Graphs are given comparing the absoption-desorption processes corresponding to the ratios of the example. Absorption may be effected under pressure.
