A brake band 5, acting on a number of beams 1a to 1f whose yarns are being combined, has a fixed end 5a and an adjustable end 5b which is moved by a yarn compensating roller 8 and chain drive 7 so that a constant tension is maintained in the band 5 and hence in the yarns drawn off from the beams. A spring 9 may be incorporated in the adjustable end of the band.
