Abstract

960,547. Pipe unions. SHELL RESEARCH Ltd. April 6, 1962, No. 13339/62. Addition to 776,838. Heading F2G. In a pipe union of the kind described in the parent Specification and wherein the members 1, 2 are connected by a bayonet joint and the parts respectively incorporate a manuallyoperable member 5 and a valve 3 normally closed by fluid and/or spring pressure, the valve being opened after connection of the parts by a plunger 4 upon operation of the member 5, the outer member 2 is of varying external diameter and the member 5 carried by the inner part 1 is adapted when in a second position to prevent the connection or disconnection of the bayonet joint by engaging with a portion of the member 2 of larger diameter and, when in a first position after connection of the bayonet joint, to be movable to the second position while passing outside a portion of smaller diameter of the member 3. As shown, the member 2 is formed with flats 13 which constitute portions of smaller diameter of the member 2, and a lug 14 extends from the member 5; when the projections 12 of the part 1 are fully engaged in the L-shaped slots 10 of the part 3, the lug can be turned to the position so as to cover one of the flats 13 and to open the valve. The parts 1, 3 cannot be disengaged until the lug is turned back to a position in which the valve is closed.
