Abstract

842,260. Pipe couplings. TRELEMAN, L. M. Jan. 23, 1959 [Feb. 5, 1958], No. 2583/59. Class 99(1). A coupling for a fluid-flow system comprises a tubular valve housing 12, 17 a valve 20 in the housing and means for holding the valve normally closed, a tubular body 37 coaxial with the housing and axially spaced therefrom, and a tubular actuator 45 coaxial with the body and slidable therein so as to be extensible from the body towards the housing while retaining a fluid-tight seal with the body. There is means to prevent relative rotation between the actuator and the body, co-operating sealing means engageable together to provide a fluidtight seal between the actuator and housing when the former is extended from the body, whereby a fluid-tight connection is made through the actuator from the body to the housing without the necessity of relative axial movement of the body and housing, and means 48 on the actuator for forcing the valve to open as the actuator becomes fully extended from the body. For extending the actuator from the body there is a screw-threaded coupling comprising a part 53 having an external thread and secured to the actuator and an internally threaded sleeve 32 surrounding the housing and rotatable and axially movable relative to the housing to extend beyond the latter towards the body, the body having an abutment 41 against which the sleeve engages when screwed on to the part 53 so that rotation of the sleeve draws the actuator towards the housing ; an abutment 56 on the housing limits movement of the actuator towards the housing. As shown, the valve housing consists of the parts 12, 17 in screw-threaded engagement, locked together by a circlip 24, and sealed by an O ring 29 and the tubular valve actuator 45 which is slidable in the body 37 has stub splines 47 co-operating with internal, axial splines 38 of the body and is sealed to the latter by an 0 ring 44. In coupling the parts 37 and 12, 17 by screwing the sleeve 32 onto the part 53, the cross-bar 48 on the actuator 45 engages the valve 20 to move the latter from a seat 19 and against the pressure exerted by a spring 23, the actuator being sealed with the housing by an 0 ring 31.
