In a device for setting and/or adjusting the surface level 10 of a liquefied gas in an open ended receptacle B the device comprises a gas type thermometer element 16 made up of a detection element 17 and a pressure sensitive element 19, the detector element 17 being disposed parallel to and above the surface 10 of the liquid in order to be subjected to the temperature gradient above the liquid surface 10. The device operates as follows. When the surface 10 is between the levels 11, 12 electric circuit in a relay R are open and valves V 1 , V 2 are closed so that evaporation of a liquefied gas in a bottle C places the liquid in the bottle C under pressure to feed liquid to the receptacle B. If the consumption of liquid in the receptacle B is greater than its liquid intake the level 10 drops to the level 11 and the element 17 heats up so that the gas therein expands to expand a bellows 19 to close contacts 20, 23 to energize, through the relay R the electrically operated valve V 1 which is opened to admit compressed gas to bottle C which forces an increased amount of liquid into the receptacle B to raise the level 10 to cool the element 17 and hence cause closure of the valve V 1 . If the consumption of liquid from the receptacle B is less than its intake the level 10 rises to level 12 to cool the element 17 and close contacts 20, 22 to energize and open valve V 2 which permits gas to escape from the bottle C and decompress the liquid therein and hence reduce the liquid supply to the receptacle B.
