Abstract

PURPOSE: To shorten the time from start of energization of the detecting device until reaching the stable operation, by disposing valve made of thermomemory type metallic material in the cap to cover the gas detecting element which is heated while in operation.
CONSTITUTION: A gas detecting element 1 made of oxide semiconductor having a heater 2 disposed in the vicinity thereof is covered with an explosionproof seal 3 and a cap 4. A valve 5 made of thermomemory type metallic material having relatively low martensite transformation temperature, such as Cu-Zn-Si alloy, is disposed in the cap 4 in a freely opening and closing manner. While no power is fed, the valve 5 is positioned as indicated by the imaginary line and the cap 4 is closed. When power is fed into the detector, the element 1 is heated by the heater 2, and the temperature of the valve 5 rises at the same time until exceeding the transformation temperature of the metallic material. Then, the valve 5 is displaced suddenly to occupy the position indicated by solid line, so that the gas being measured is allowed to flow freely into the device. Therefore, while not in use, the detecting element 1 is shielded from the atmosphere, and is free from contamination due to gas occlusion, so that the stable operation state may be achieved promptly.
