Abstract

843,317. Valves. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. May 14,1958 [May 22, 1957], No. 15455/58. Class 135. A leak-proof valve comprises a hollow valve member 17 having a valve head 18 which when the valve member and valve body 10 are at the same temperature has a slight interference fit with a port 15 which it controls. To close the valve, coolant fluid is first circulated through the valve member to reduce its size to approximately that of the port 15. Pressure liquid is then admitted to a chamber 28 beneath a piston 26. When closed the flow of coolant fluid is stopped whence the valve member expands to its original size to firmly seal the port. To open the valve coolant fluid is again circulated through the valve member whence any welding between the valve member and its port, which may be the case when liquid sodium is the controlled fluid, is broken, and the valve may then be opened by admitting pressure liquid above the piston.
