Abstract
959,753. Winding and reeling. MORGAN CONSTRUCTION CO. Nov. 27, 1962 [Nov. 28, 1961], No. 44764/62. Heading B3E. A laying reel for coiling hot rod comprises a drum, a surrounding casing and means for causing cooling air, passing down through rod being coiled around the drum between the drum and the casing, to travel in diverse directions to improve the cooling of the red. Hot rod 49 is delivered down a pipe 74, through an opening 75 therein, and into a rotated laying cone 36 which lays the rod in coils 50 around a drum 42, between it and surrounding casing 14. The casing 14 is in two semi-cylindrical halves 16, 18 so that after the drum 42 has been lowered out of the coiled rod and the section 18 raised, pusher arms moved through slots 70, 72 in the section 16 push the completed coil on to a conveyer. To cool the rod as it is wound air from a duct 22 passes generally downwards over the coil and out through ports 66, 68 in a base-plate 12. The coil is spaced from the drum 42 by vertical, tapered ribs 52 thereon. Annular grooves 56, 56a, 56b in the casing 14 impart a turbulence to the cooling air. Vertical partitions 58, 58a, 58b break the grooves into a series of pockets and prevent entry of convolutions of the coiled rod into the pockets. Specification 706,545 is referred to.
