Abstract

1,151,523. Drawing. MARSHALL RICHARDS MACHINE CO. Ltd. 19 Sept., 1966 [20 Sept., 1965], No. 39966/65. Heading B3P. A method of drawing metal tubing comprises leading a coil of tubing from a rotating paying out spool through a drawing die, laying the tubing as it leaves the die in a helix on the surface of a drawing block rotating in one direction, and collecting the tubing, as it leaves the block, as a coil on a rotating take-up spool, said take-up spool subsequently serving as the paying out spool when, in a later operation the tubing is drawn in the opposite direction through a further die by the drawing block again rotating in said one direction. An apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a drawing block 1, two spool carriers 3 and 4 and two die boxes 7 and 8. The spool carriers 3 and 4 each include an expanding mandrel on which spools 5 and 6 are located, and with which are associated bending rolls 12 and a traverse control mechanism 13. Mounted on the drum is a pulling-in dog 9 and spaced around the drum are pressure rollers 10. Operation.-Tubing from the spool 5 has the end prepared by inserting a floating plug, lubricating and pointing and is threaded through the die 7 and held by the gripper 9. Four to eight turns are wound on to the block 1, using the pressure rollers 10 and the gripped end is then cut off and the tubing led on to the spool 6. Drawing then proceeds until all the tubing is on the spool 6. For the next draw the tubing is prepared and threaded through the die 8, wrapped on the block 1 and then taken to the spool 5. Guide troughs extend between the dies and the bending rolls 12. The apparatus may include a second set of dies and spool carriers in a plane at right angles to the set shown in Fig. 1, so that the preparation of tubing on one of the second pair of spools can take place while the drawing operation between the first set of spools is proceeding.
