Abstract

A method of coiling hot rolled wire or rod comprises guiding a leading end of the wire or rod from a finisher through a guide tube to a rotating coiler where it is caught by friction, the arrangement being such that the wire or rod forms a loop between the finisher and the coiler, the loop size being controlled by a sensing device which governs the speed of the finisher or the coiler to maintain the loop at or near a preselected size and causing relative to- and-fro motion between the guide tube and the coiler in the axial direction of the coiler so as to coil the wire or rod tightly layer by layer. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a loop regulator having outer and inner flanges 2, 3 and a guide tube 6 leading to a coiler. The guide tube can be moved through an angle 61 by a motor 64 and screw and nut means 62, 63 (Fig. 2). The coiler comprises a stand 21 and shaft 22 carrying a mandrel 24 comprising three segments 7, each of which is eccentrically and pivotally journalled and spring-loaded in a respective standard 71 so as to be collapsible. The segments have pegs 79 around which the wire is wound. After coiling the coil is raised by a lifting disc 27 fixed to a bar 26. The coiler also has an upper guide 8 provided with a flat disc 81 and an outer drum 28 has slots for coolant jets 91 from nozzles 9. The coiler axis can be vertical, horizontal or inclined.
