Abstract

907,838. Winding and reeling wire. GEOFFROY-DELORE S.A. May 23, 1960 [June 2, 1959], No. 18096/60. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group IX] Apparatus for winding wire into the form of stacked turns, or for unwinding wire from such form, comprises a device for winding or unwinding the wire, means for temporarily storing turns, having a horizontal supporting surface locatable at a small vertical distance beneath said device, means for controlling the operative location of said surface, a vertically-movable support for raising or lowering a stack of regularly staggered turns of the wire to maintain the top of the stack at a small distance below the device. Wire to be wound passes over pulleys 42, 43, down a hollow shaft 29, rotated by a motor 26, and over pulleys 30, 32 carried by said rotating shaft 29 to be laid thereby around a capstan 33 which is kept from rotation about its axis by gears 35 and shaft 34. The shaft 29 is mounted for rotation in a plate 22 carried by three cranks 23 rotated slowly by a chain 24, driven either through reducing gear from the shaft 29 or by an auxiliary motor, so that wire from the slowly orbiting capstan 33 is laid in overlapping turns around a support 1 positioned therebeneath. Springs 37 on a frame 36 carried by the plate 22 press the convolutions on the capstan 33 and the wire is guided therefrom to the support 1 by a cylindrical capstan extension 38 of slightly reduced diameter and a fixed annular guide 39. The wire is laid around the support 1 upon combs 10, 11 on carriages 45 moved downwardly, under the control of chains 46 and a motor 49, so that as the stack of wire turns is built up the top thereof is maintained a constant small distance below the capstan 33. When the combs 10, 11 reach the base of the support 1 they are withdrawn and members 40 on the guide 39 are moved so that they temporarily support wire from the capstan, while the full support 1 is moved away on rollers 2 and replaced by an empty one. Supports may slide down an inclined plane p, Fig. 4, and be moved away by a chain t. Full supports may be covered by a drum bolted on to the support, Fig. 10 (not shown). Unwinding.-A full reel 1 is positioned under a cylinder 64, Fig. 8, supported on rods 61. Segments 62 above the rods 61 bearing against the cylinder 64 to support the last turns of the previous stack being unwound. Combs 10, 11 then move underneath the stack of wire turns on the support 1 and lift the stack until it reaches the segments 62 which are then retracted together with the rods 61. Retraction of the rods 61 allows links 65, 67 to lower cylinders 68 from the bottom of the cylinder 64 so that the latter is supported by them on the support 1. Wire is withdrawn from the stack, around a cap 71, freely mounted on the cylinder 64, and out through a trumpet 73 and over a pulley 77, the trumpet 73 being rotated by a belt 78 driven by the pulley 77 as it is rotated by passage of the wire. The combs 10, 11 rise slowly, to keep the top of the stack at a constant height, until they move above the position of the segments 62, whereupon the rods 61 move inwardly to withdraw the cylinders 68 and support the cylinder 64 and the segments 62 move in to support what is left of the stack. The combs 10, 11 are then lowered and the now empty support 1 replaced by a full one.
