Abstract

1,160,488. Coiling wire. SCHLOEMANN A.G. 7 Dec. 1967 [14 Dec., 1966], No. 55772/67. Heading B3E. A wire coiling apparatus receiving thin or thick wire from a high-speed rolling mill comprises the combination of a turn layer for thin wire in which the laying tube revolves about a horizontal axis, a tripping device which causes the turns to fall into a horizontal plane, a conveyer which removes the fanned out turns and delivers them to a collecting funnel having a Garrett reel arranged beneath it and also comprises an intake tube for thick wire. The turn layer 1 is driven by a motor 2 and has a laying tube 5 which deposits turns in a worm thread 4 on a laying cone 3. The coils 6a are tripped by an edge 7a and fall on to a conveyer 7 which moves them on to a roller guide 9 surrounding the mouth of a funnel 10. The coils fall through the funnel into the stationary basket of a Garrett reel 11. To improve the space filling factor the funnel 10 is oscillated eccentrically by a drive 15 through a crank 17. The above mode of operation is used when coiling wire or rod having a diameter of up to 16 mm. when thicker material is to be wound, the funnel 10 is moved transversely of the line on rails 23 and a curved guide (14), Fig. 2 (not shown) is swung into position which feeds the material directly from the mill to the reel 11, which now rotates to wind on the wire. In either mode of operation, when the reel is full, the bottom plate 12c is raised and the coil moved by pushers 18a on to a wagon 32 which is moved by a crank mechanism 30 along rails 31 to transfer the coil to a chain conveyer 33. When rolling two strands simultaneously a complete assembly as described above is provided for coiling each strand, but when a single strand is being rolled the apparatus comprises a single turn layer, and two divergent conveyers fed alternately through a switch and each carrying turns to a respective coiling basket. A guide tube, leading to each basket for coiling thicker wire in the Garrett mode of operation, is also provided.
