Abstract

954,770. Unwinding. UNITED ENGINEERING & FOUNDRY CO. March 20, 1963 [April 20, 1962], No. 10947/63. Heading B3E. A method of preparing coils of strip for feeding them successively into a continuous processing line comprises the steps of positioning a coil in a first uncoiler, uncoiling a portion of the leading end of the coil, operating a shear to shear a portion of the uncoiled leading end, recoiling the unsheared leading end by the first uncoiler, transferring the coil to a second uncoiler, and at the same time refeeding the sheared leading end portion to the shear and cutting it up into shorter lengths. A coil of metal strip is lifted from a conveyer 10 by an upender 12 swung 90 degrees on its shaft 16 by piston and cylinder means 17 to present the coil to a first transfer car 27 moved into position along rails 34 by piston and cylinder means 64. Piston and cylinder means 22 on the upender 12 is then lowered and piston means 32 on the car 27 raised to place the coil on a platen 31 on the carriage 27 which is then moved to a position between cradle rolls 36, 37 where the platen 31 is lowered to deposit the coil on the rolls. Peeler means 41 then operates to separate the leading end of the strip from the coil as the rolls 36, 37 are rotated. The rolls 36, 37 are then stopped and the peeler means 41 retracted to bend the leading strip end over a rod 47 to form a permanent set. The leading end is then rewound on to the coil, then unwound to pinch rolls 65, these feed the strip through straightening means 67, over a table 68, through an open shear 72 and pinch rolls 70 on to a table 77. The rolls 36, 37 are then stopped, the shear 72 severs the leading end and the rolls 36, 37 are restarted to rewind the extended portion of the coil. The coil is then carried by a car 48 to an uncoiler 35, the coil being rotated 90 degrees during such travel by rotating a coil support column 52 on the car 48. Meanwhile the table 68 is raised by means 71 and the pinch rolls 70 are operated intermittently to feed the severed strip end back to the shear 72 which severs it into pieces dropping into a car 79.
