[Also in Division B8] An arrangement for conveying coils having coil spools to an uncoiler or from a coiler, comprises a coil car 23 which can move along rails 22, in the direction of an expandable mandrel 16 of the uncoiler and which has first and second surfaces 34, 37 on a bracket 32 for receiving a coil 35 and an empty spool 38, and means for raising and lowering the bracket 32 to bring either the coil or the empty spool into alignment with the mandrel. The bracket 32 is raised and lowered by a cylinder 28. Coils are fed to the car by means of a walking beam bed comprising stationary saddles fixed to a pair of parallel fixed beams 42, 43 between Which is a moving beam 45 having further saddles fixed to it. The beam 45 rests on rollers (46), Fig. 2 (not shown), attached to mountings (47) which are pivoted at the upper left-hand comers to fixed points and at the bottom to another moving beam (48). The coils are conveyed by first moving the beam (48) towards the car 23 and then the beam 45, the end coil 35 being moved over the surface 34 on the carriage 23. The beam 45 is then lowered by retracting the beam 48. The carriage is then run along the rails 22 up to the mandrel 16 and the bracket 32 raised until the surface 37 is aligned with the mandrel to receive an empty spool pushed from the mandrel by a stripper plate 17. The bracket 32 is then lowered bringing the axis of the coil 35 into line with the mandrel and the car 23 is moved further along the rails to fit the spool on to the mandrel. As the car moves back, stops engage the empty spool to flip it on to a ramp 41 along which it runs to a location. 51 where it may be picked up by a similar car and placed on the mandrel 21 of a coiler on the other side of the rolling mill 12 from the uncoiler. The carriage is equally suitable for use with coilers or uncoilers. The surfaces 34, 37 may both be in the form of V-shaped saddles as shown, or the upper surface 34 may comprise motor-driven rollers to support and rotate the supported coil.
