Abstract

1364101 Coiling helices MORGAN CONSTRUCTION CO 23 Nov 1971 [9 Dec 1970] 54349/71 Heading B3E Rod or bar from a rolling mill or other elongated product is coiled by laying means rotatable about a mandrel, the leading part of the product being coiled loosely about the mandrel and then held against the mandrel while the laying speed is increased to form tight turns, the mandrel being reciprocated to form the coil and eventually withdrawn from the completed coil. In the Figure, the mandrel 12 protrudes through a platen 62 resting on a flange 66 on the mandrel. The laying head comprises a rotatable tube 14 and laying pipe 30a, 30b, 30c, 30d supported by skirt 34 attached to tube 14 by spider 36. The top of the coil is defined by two plates 55a, 55b retractable by jacks 51a. Two arcuate grippers 68a, 68b (see also Fig. 2, not shown) are rotatable on the platen by torque motors 72 so as to abut the mandrel face or be spaced from it. The mandrel is reciprocable on a guide system 42, 46 by jack 52. In operation, the presence of an advancing length of product is sensed and causes rotation of the laying head at a speed to form a few loose coils round the mandrel during a time delay, after which the grippers 68a, 68b are actuated to hold those coils against the mandrel and the laying head speed is increased to produce a predetermined tension in the product and form tight coils on the mandrel. Reciprocation of the mandrel to form layered coils is also initiated, and controlled by limit switches. The grippers are released before the first coils are overwound. When the end of the product length passes the sensor, a time delay is allowed to finish coiling, then the mandrel is lowered so that the platen rests on supports 74, and further lowered after retraction of plates 55a, 55b, to leave the coil free for removal.
