Abstract
1,266,244. Winding and reeling. UNITED ENG. & FOUNDRY CO. 15 Oct., 1969 [18 Oct., 1968], No. 50.588/69. Heading B3E. Apparatus for coiling and uncoiling strip comprises a rotatable mandrel 11, a drive shaft 27 releasably coupled to the mandrel and which partially supports the mandrel with a part 23 of the mandrel projecting into an opening 31 in the shaft, supports 33, 34 displaceable in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the shaft and having the shaft rotatably mounted thereon, and lift 41 for the mandrel 11 while the shaft is displaced relative to the mandrel to disconnect the mandrel from the shaft to allow the mandrel to be replaced. Segments 17 of the mandrel 11 are expanded by axially moving a rod 25, the rod being moved by sliding a bearing assembly 48 along the shaft 27 by means of a ram 43. In order to replace a mandrel the lift 41 is raised to support the mandrel and the mandrel disconnected from the shaft 27. A bar 49 is removed from the rod 25 and a ram 39 retracts the shaft 27 from the mandrel 11 by traversing a sled 35 along guideways 37. The separated mandrel is then removed so that a replacement mandrel can be substituted on the lift 41 and the above operation repeated in reverse. A ram actuated wedge 15 secures the bearing 12 to the support 14 and also returns the mandrel from axial displacement when the shaft 27 is disengaged from the mandrel.
