Abstract

1,071,594. Winding webs. UNITED ENGINEERING & FOUNDRY CO. Aug. 11, 1964, No. 32588/64. Heading B6B. [Also in Division B3] A reel for coiling and/or uncoiling strip comprises a housing, a mandrel rotatably supported by said housing at its inboard end and having an outboard strip-receiving end overhanging one side of the housing, a support means for the outboard end of said mandrel, means for moving said support means into a mandrel supporting position, and a member connecting said support means with the housing. A mandrel 11 is supported at one end in a housing 12 and rotated by means in the housing. The housing 12 is movable axially during winding by piston and cylinder means 19 under appropriate automatic control to compensate for transverse strip wander. An arm 22 interconnects the housing 12 and support means for the outer end of the mandrel, which support means includes a bell crank arm 26 keyed to a shaft 27 for axial movement thereof, the shaft 27 being rotatably mounted on the arm 22. In operation, to move the support means into engagement with the outboard end of the mandrel 11, piston and cylinder means (33), Fig. 1 (not shown), is first actuated to swing the arm 26 about the axis of the shaft 27 to position a bearing 35 on the arm 26 in front of the mandrel 11 and a positioning stud (37) on the arm 26 opposite a bore (38) (not shown) in the arm 22. Piston and cylinder means 32 then moves the arm 26 axially of and towards the mandrel 11 so that the stud (37) enters the bore (38) and the bearing 35 then moves on to a cylindrical portion 36 of the mandrel 11.
