Abstract

1277515 Coiling and winding MORGAN CONSTRUCTION CO 17 July 1970 [4 Aug 1969] 34736/70 Heading B3E [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for coiling hot rolled metal rod or bar or other elongate material on a rotating mandrel includes a front end catching device comprising clamping means partly surrounding one end of the mandrel said clamping means being rotatable about an axis spaced laterally from the rotational axis of the mandrel and guide means for diagonally directing the front end of the rod or bar between the mandrel and the clamping means so that it is gripped. The coiler 2 comprises a gear housing 4 mounted on a carriage 6 movable along tracks 10 by a cylinder 5 (Fig. 2). A sleeve 12 carries a pinion 16 in the gear housing and a mandrel shaft 24 extends through the sleeve. The end 26 of the shaft is grooved to accommodate pivoted links 28 which carry curved mandrel sections 32 (Fig. 4). Each mandrel section is also pivoted to the sleeve 12 by links 36. The mandrel sections are collapsed by pulling the shaft 24 by means of a double acting cylinder 42 on the gear housing thus an accumulated coil can be removed from the mandrel. The coiler is further provided with an axially adjustable end plate assembly 48 mounted on a second carriage 50 movable on tracks 50b on the carriage 6 by means of a cylinder 51. The front end catching device comprises a cylindrical housing 59 carried by an arm 60 mounted on the carriage 6. The housing supports guide rollers 64 seated in a circular track 66 attached to end plate 58b which has an annular surface 70 and a circular clamping surface 72 extending laterally therefrom which define a clamping groove 74. The end plate 58b and its clamping surface 72 rotate about an axis 76 which is urged away from the mandrel axis 80 by an hydraulic rotary actuator 78. The clamping surface 72 contacts the coil winding surface 47 at 82 the maximum width of the clamping groove 74 being spaced at the bottom of the apparatus. The catcher also includes guide means comprising an arm 84 pivoted to a support 85 (Fig. 2) and actuated by a cylinder 89 the arm being movable axially against a spring 90 (Fig. 4). The arm has a curved lower section 92 forming first and second guide surfaces 94 and 96 the first guide surface curving inwardly towards the coil winding surface 47 and the second guide surface curving in a diagonal direction towards the annular surface 70 on end plate 58b. In operation, as the leading end of the rod proceeds into the clamping groove it is eventually gripped between surfaces 72 and 74 and the end plate 58b is wedged slightly upwards and the winding commences. As the coil forms the arm 84 is urged away from the end plate 58b until several turns have been made whereupon the cylinder 89 lifts the arm into its operative position. A hot coil of rod is cooled by a fan 108 in housing 59.
