The invention relates to apparatus for opening the outer end of a metal coil, so that it may be fed to a recoiler, such for instance as disclosed in Greer Patent No. 2,191,463, dated February 27, 1940, or Greer application Serial No. 230,304, for loosely recoiling the coil so that it may be passed through a pickling machine of the general type disclosed in Greer Patents No. 2,091,921, dated August 31, 1940, and No, 2,196,210 dated April 9, 1940, and the present application is a division of my co-pending application for Coil opener and feeder, Serial No. 270,732, filed April 29, 1939, and relates only to the coil opening mechanism.
Difiiculty has been experienced in starting the outer end of a hot rolled coil into recoilers of the general character above referred to, the outer end of the hot rolled coil being loosened or opened up and fed to the recoiler by hand.
- The object of the present improvement is to provide a mechanism which will automatically loosen or open'up the outer end of the coil and The improved coil opening apparatus to which this application pertains may be mounted in a housing indicated generally at H), in the lower portion of which are journaled the spaced rolls l i for supporting the coil C which is to be opened.
A roll I2 is preferably provided in the housing ID at a point spaced above the rolls II and in position to engage one side of the coil, C so as feed the same through a set of leveling or breaker rolls to the recoiler. 1
Another object is to provide a self-adjusting, fluid cylinder operated spud for loosening or opening the outer end of the coil and bending it outward to proper position to be received in the feeding mechanism.
Another object of the invention is to provide clamping means for holding the coil against movement upon the feed rolls during the operation of the spud.
A still further object is to provide means for rotating the coil. after the outer end has been opened up, or loosened, so as to feed said outer end into the recoiler.
The above objects together with others which will be apparent from the drawings and following description, or which may be later referred to, may be attained by constructing the improved coil opener in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical, longitudinal sectional view through the improved coil opening mechanism; v

Sprocket wheels l3 are fixed upon the ends of the rolls I I and connected by a sprocket chain 14 so that both rolls II are driven in the same direction and at the same speed.
For driving the rolls a sprocket wheel 15 may be fixed upon the shaft of one roll H and connected as by the sprocket chain IS with any suitable source of power.
In order to accommodate coils of various widths an adjustable plate I! may be slidably mounted at one end upon the tie-rod l8 which is located transversely through one side of the housing Ill.
The opposite end portion of the plateis adapted to selectively engage any desired notch I9 in the plate, 20 located transversely across the other side of the housing.
For the purpose of holding the coil rigidly against movement during the opening operation clamping means is provided comprising the clamping jaw 2| fulcrumed as at 22 at one side of the housing l0 and extending through a slot 23 in the adjacent side of the housing, a lever arm 24 being rigidly connected to said jaw and extending outwardly from the fulcrum and being pivotally connected as at 25 to the piston rod 26 of a fluid operated cylinder. 21 which may be hingedly mounted as at 28 upon the adjacent side of the housing Ill.
The cylinder 21 may be operated to move the plunger 26 downwardor outward inorder to withdraw the clamping jaw 2| outwardly through the opening 23 in the housing, inorder to place a new coil within the housing, after which the cylinder 21 is operated to the position best shown in Fig. 2, inserting the clamping jaw 2| into the center opening of the coil and pressing said clamping jaw tightly upon the lower portion of the coil to hold the same againstmovement upon therollsll.
A rod 29. may be slidably located through the housing transversely thereof for the purpose of preventing the coil Cfrcm lifting out of the housing during the operation of uncoiling the same, when the coil has been unwound to such said carriage being provided with rolls 33 rolling upon theguide rods 34 which extend outwardly from the adjacent side of the housing l and may be supported at their outer ends as by the bracket 35.
The spud 36 for opening the outer end of the coil may be pivotally mounted as at 31 upon the lower end of the piston rod 38, of an upright fluid cylinder 39, which may be pivotally mounted, intermediate its ends, as indicated at 40, within a bifurcated bracket 4| slidably mounted upon the guide plate 42. This guide plate is transversely located relative to the housing In and is connected at its ends to the upper portions of the uprights 43 of said housing. The bracket 4| has. guide-ways 44 sli'dably mounted upon the guide ribs 45 formed upon the guide plate 42.
The upper end of the fluid cylinder 39 is provided with the diametrically opposed studs 46 slidably mounted in the slots 41 of the bifurcated head 48 carried by the end of the piston rod 49 of .the'fiuid cylinder 50 which is pivotally connected as at to the arm 52 carried by'the bracket 4|.
Springs 53 are connected at opposite ends to the studs 46 and to pins 54 at the forward end of the bifurcated head 48 so as to normally urge the fluid cylinder 39 toward the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1.
I A screw shaft 55 is journaled in the uprights 43 adjacent to the guide plate 42 and the interposition shown in broken lines at B and finally assuming the broken line position shown at B' in Figure 1.
The spud may then be'withdrawn to the full so light in weight that its own weight will not nally threaded boss 56 of the bracket 4| is mounted upon said screw shaft, a hand wheel 56a being fixed upon one end of the screw shaft for adjusting the position of the fluid cylinder 39 and spud 36 transversely relative to the housing I0.
In the operation of the improved machine to open the outer end of a coil, a hot rolled coil as indicated at C is placed upon the rolls II and the power means operating the sprocket chain It is operated to rotate the rollsll until the coil assumes the position shown in Figure 1 with the outer end E thereof located as shown in full lines in said figure directly below the normal or inoperative position of the spud 36.
The rotation of the rolls H is stopped when the coil reaches this positionand the fluid cylinder 21 is operated to move the clamping jaw 2| into the clamping position shown in Fig. 2,
clamping the lower portion of the coil against movement on the rolls In order to facilitate the placing of a coil upon the rolls, the fluid cylinder 59 may have first been operated to swing the cylinder 39 and spud 36 to the broken line position shown at A in Figure 1,
After the coil has been placed in position and clamped as above described, the cylinder is then operated to move the cylinder 39 and spud 36 back to the full line position shown in Figure 1.
With the cylinder 39 in this position the same is operated to force the spud 36 downward beneath the outer end E of the coil loosening said outer end and bending it outward from the coil through the several broken line positions of said outer end indicated in Figure 1, the spud pivotally moving upon the piston rod 38 to accommodate itself to the outward movement of the end'of the coil,;the spud passing through the hold it down upon the rolls H the rod 29 will prevent the coil from lifting out of the housing ID as the remainder thereof is fed into the recoiler.
I claim:
1. Apparatusfor opening the outer end of a coil of metal including rolls for supporting the coil parallel to the rolls, means for rotating the rolls to rotate the coil around its axis, means for clamping the coil against movement upon the 'rolls, a fluid cylinder pivotally mounted adjacent to the coil, a piston rod in the cylinder movable tangentially toward the coil, an elongated tapered spud pivotally mounted at its larger end upon said piston rod for engaging the smaller end of the spud under and opening up the outer end of the coil, and means for swinging said cylinder upon its pivot to urge the spud against the periphery of the coil. 2. Apparatus for opening the outer end of a coil of metal including rolls for supporting the coil parallel to the rolls, means for rotating the rolls to rotate the coil around its axis, means [or clamping the coil against movement upon the rolls, a fluid cylinder pivotally mounted adjacent to the coil, a piston rod in the cylinder movable tangentially toward the coil, an elongated, tapered spudpivotally mounted at its larger end upon said piston rod for engaging the smaller end of the spud under and opening up the outer end of the coil, a second fluid cylinder located pivotal point.
3. Apparatus for opening the outer end of a coil of metal including rolls for supporting the coil parallel to the rolls, means for rotating the rolls to rotate the coil around its axis, means for clamping the coil against movement upon the rolls, a fluid cylinder pivotally mounted adjacent to the coil, a piston rod in the cylinder movable tangentially toward the coil, a spud pivotally mounted upon said piston rod for engaging under and opening up the outer end of the coil, a second fluidcylinder, a piston in said second cylinder operatively connected to said pivotally mounted cylinder for swinging the pivotally mounted cylinder upon its pivot, and spring means associated with the pivotally mounted cylinder and the last named piston rod for swinging the pivotally mounted cylinder upon its pivot to urge said spud against the periphery of the coil.
4. Apparatus for opening the outer end of a coil of metal including a housing, rolls mounted in the housing for supporting the coil parallel to the rolls, means for rotating the rolls to rotate the coil around itsaxis, means for clamping the coil against movement upon the rolls. a
bracket slidably mounted in the housing for movement longitudinally of the coil, a fluid cylinder pivotally mounted upon the bracket, a piston rod in the cylinder movable tangentially toward the coil, and a spud pivotally mounted upon said piston rod for engaging under and opening up the outer end of the coil.
5. Apparatus for opening the outer end of a coil of metal including a housing, rolls mounted in the housing for supporting the'coil parallel to the/rolls, means forrotating the rolls to rotate the coil around its axis, means for clamping the coil against movement upon the rolls, a bracket slidably mounted in the housing for movement 1 longitudinally of the coil, a fluid cylinderpivotally mounted upon the bracket, a piston rod in the cylinder movable tangentiallytoward the coil, a spud pivotally mounted upon said piston rod for engaging under and opening up the outer end of the coil, a second fluid cylinder mounted in the housing, a piston rod in said second cylinder operatively connected to the said pivotally mounted cylinder for swinging the pivotally mounted cylinder upon its pivot, and spring means associated with the pivotally mounted cylinder and the last named piston rod for swinging the pivotally mounted cylinder upon its pivot to urge said spud against the periphery of the coil.
6. Apparatus for opening the outer end of a coil of metal including a housing, rolls mounted in the housing for supporting the coil parallel a the rolls, means for clamping the coil against movement upon the rolls, a fluid cylinder pivotond fluid cylinder for slidably moving said 'rod through the open center of the coil.
