Abstract
1,156,296. Coiling strip. BLAW-KNOX CO. 6 Feb., 1968 [2 March, 1967], No. 5928/68. Heading B3E. [Also in Division F2] Strip coiling apparatus comprises a stationary support, a shaft carried by the support and having a free end projecting from the support to carry the coil, shaft driving means fixed relative to the support, means for sensing the position of an edge of a moving strip forming part of the material on the coil, and means for moving the shaft axially independently of the support and the driving means, in response to signals from the sensing means to maintain the strip edge in a predetermined position. Strip 2 to be wound into a coil 3, passes over bridle rollers 15, idler roller 16 and rubber-covered deflector roller 17, and on to an expansible mandrel 4. The position of the edge of the strip is detected by a sensor 5 which is connected to a regulator 7, controlling the flow of hydraulic fluid from a source 10 to a double-acting cylinder in which is a piston 14. The mandrel 4 is mounted on a shaft 21 which is reciprocated by the piston 14 and driven in rotation by a motor 18. The shaft 21 slides in sleeve bearings 35, 36 formed in sleeve 24 which is itself carried by roller bearings in the housing 19. Although there is no relative rotation between the shaft 21 and the bearings 35 and 36, the point of contact L, Fig. 6, travels around the bearing as the sleeve rotates, since the weight of the coil causes the shaft to be supported by the bottom of the front bearing 36 and the top of the rear bearing. Lubricant is supplied to the bearings through a pipe 66 and an annular casing 64 which is sealed in running contact with the sleeve, at a position where it is pierced by a radial hole 67. An extension of the shaft 21 is supported by ball bearings 50 in the piston 14. The cylinder 42 is fixed to the housing 19. The drum 4 includes a collapsible mandrel which is operated by a rod 22 which passes centrally through the shaft 21, and which is supported by roller bearings in a guide member 51. mounted on the piston-rod of an hydraulic cylinder assembly 60. The guide member 51 is prevented from turning, relative to a cage 52, by splines 54. The cage 52 has projecting lugs 55 which enter longitudinal slots 56 in horns extending rearwardly from the fixed cylinder 42.
