The present invention relates to an improvement in the structure of a combination coiling and uncoiling apparatus which is operative to take up in a coil-like shape a hoop continuously fed out of a rolling mill or the like and to pay off the hoop wound in the coil-like shape therefrom.
Conventional combination coiling and uncoiling apparatus of this type hitherto employed in the art consisted of t wo sections, that is, a mechanical section including coiling and uncoiling mechanisms therein and a section ncluding therein an electric motor for driving the mechanical section, and these two sections are completely separated from each other. According to prior practice connection between these two sections has been effected 111 a manner that one end of a drum shaft in the mechanical section is connected by means of a coupling with one end of the drive shaft in the electric motor or a hollow shaft accommodating therein the drum shaft of the mechamcal section is indirectly connected with the drive shaft in the electric motor through a reduction gearing interposed therebetween. Thus, the conventional combination COlllIlg and uncoiling apparatus has required a complex structure and a wide space for installation and has been dlsadvantageous in respect of economy.
Therefore, it is the primary object of the present invention to provide an improved combination coilin and uncoilmg apparatus which is simple in structure? requires gully: ci'lsltdll space for installation and can be obtained There are other objects and particularities of the present invention which will become obvious from the followng description With reference to the accompanying drawing, in which the sole figure is a fragmentarily longitudirlijal sectional front view of an embodiment of the co theIHinIIZeEIIlIEiCiEIHFOIhHg and uncoiling apparatus according to Referring to the figure, the coiling and uncoiling drum forming a part of the mechanical section is axially split into a plurality of drum segments 1. A plurality of axial $61165 of wedge-shaped grooves 2 are provided in the inner peripheral face of the drum so as to cause radial movement of the drum segments 1 in cooperation with means as will be described later to thereby vary the diameter of the outer periphery of the drum formed by the drum segments 1. An electric motor to drive the drum is generally designated by reference numeral 3 and has a hollow rotor shaft 4 therein. A drum shaft 7 extends through the axial bore in the rotor shaft 4 and one end thereof terminates in the drum. A wedge member 5 1s axiallyslidably mounted on this end of the drum shaft 7 and is in engagement with the wedge-shaped grooves 2 n the drum. On the other end of the drum shaft 7, there 15. mounted a rotary cylinder 6 which is connected with a distributing valve 16 for receiving a fluid at pressure there from. The drum shaft 7 is journalled in bearings 9 and 10 on opposite sides of the motor 3. The bearings 9 and 10 are suitably supported on a frame 8. An axial bore 11 extends through the entire length of the drum shaft 7, and in the axial bore 11, there is axially slidably disposed a piston rod 13 which is connected at one end with the wedge member 5 and provided at the other end with a piston 12 operatively enclosed in the rotary cylinder 6. A key 14 is provided to transmit the driving power from the rotor shaft 4 to the drum shaft 7. A hoop coiled about the drum is shown by a phantom line as at 15. A pulley 17 is disposed on the shaft 7 at a position between the electric motor 3 and the rotary cylinder 6 and is connected with a brake unit.
The radial movement of the drum segments 1 can be caused by a hydraulic pressure. Or more precisely, a fluid at pressure is supplied from a fluid source (not shown) to the distributing valve 16, thence into a compartment A or B in the rotary cylinder6 depending on the operation desired. The piston 12 secured to the piston rod 13 and disposed in the rotary cylinder 6 is urged in either direction by the pressure fluid to cause the axial movement of the piston rod 13. The movement of the piston rod 13 causes corresponding'movement of the wedge member 5, whose sloped face acts on the wedge-shaped grooves 2 formed on the inner face of the drum to cause the radial movement of the drum segments 1 so that the outer diameter of the drum can be varied. The rotation of the drum for the coiling of the hoop 15 thereon and uncoiling of the hoop 15 therefrom can be effected in interengaging relation with the radial movement of the drum segments 1, said rotation of the drum being effected by the driving force transmitted from the rotor shaft 4 of the motor 3 through the key 14 to the drum shaft 7.
From the foregoing description, it will be understood that, according to the present invention, an electric motor is interposed between a drum and a rotary cylinder and the drum is rotated from the rotor shaft of the electric motor. Thus, this arrangement provides compact structure and requires a small space for installation. Among other advantages, this invention is advantageous over conventional structure in that a hollow shaft generally used for the transmission of rotation to the drum is eliminated.
What is claimed is:
1. A combination coiling and uncoiling apparatus for use in connection with a rolling mill or the like, comprising an electric motor, a drum drive shaft extending in both directions through said motor for rotation thereby, a drum mounted on one endof said drive shaft for taking up thereon a hoop in the form of coil and paying off the coiled hoop therefrom, said drum being axially split into a plurality of drum segments arranged for movement in the radial direction of said drum, and said drum being directly coupled to said motor with a bearing interposed therebetween, a rotary cylinder mounted on the other end of said drive shaft in a manner to be directly coupled to said motor with a bearing interposed there/between, a piston movably disposed in said rotary cylinder and having its piston rod passed through an axial bore in said drive shaft to terminate at said one end of said drive shaft, and means provided in said drum and operatively connected with said piston rod so as to cause in response to axially advancing and retracting movement of said piston rod corresponding radial movement of said drum segments to thereby cause contraction and expansion of the outside diameter of said drum.
