Abstract

1,110,186. Winding webs. JOHN DUSENBERY CO. Inc. 2 Sept., 1966 [3 Sept., 1965], No. 39338/66. Heading B6B. Adaptors 10, 30, for mounting a core 41 on a driven mandrel 37 so as to rotate the core with slip for winding a thin film web on the core, comprise an outer cylindrical member having a portion insertable into the core with means for preventing relative rotation between the outer member and the core, and an inner member insertable on the mandrel, bearing means, e.g. a ball bearing, being provided between the two members. As shown, the two adaptors are held between two nylon spacer rings 40 axially movable but not rotatable relatively to the mandrel 37. The outer member of the adaptor 10 comprises two parts 11, 18 of aluminium secured together by screws 21, the part 18 being reduced to fit into the core 41. Fitting into a circumferential groove in the part 18 is an inner rubber tubular ring 26 and an outer coiled spring 27, the latter extending beyond the outer surface of the part 18 so that it bites into the core 41 and prevents relative rotation between the core and part 18. A ball-bearing 13 is provided between the outer member 11, 18 and an inner member 25 of low friction material, the member 25 being rotatable about the mandrel 37 but is axially slidable thereon. A smooth metal plate 15 is fixed to the part 11 and abuts one of the spacers 40, the frictional engagement between the parts 15, 40 constituting the sole drive from the mandrel 37 to the core 41. The other adaptor 30 has inner and outer parts with an interposed ball bearing 13<SP>1</SP>, the outer part being grooved to receive a tubular rubber ring and a coiled spring 27<SP>1</SP> as in the case of part 18, for engaging the core. The inner part 35 is of low friction material and abuts against a spacer 40. A number of assemblies as described may be mounted on the mandrel 37 for winding narrow films leaving a web slitting machine, -the mandrel for this purpose having at one end a stop collar 38 and at the other end a thrust bearing 42 pressed axially by a forked lever 47 operated by a hydraulic cylinder 45. The web material is fed to the winding apparatus by a roller driven at constant speed, and the winding mandrel speed is such that the surface velocity of the core is somewhat greater than the linear speed of the web.
