To permit the assembly of the plungers 25 and 26 in the cylinders 21 and 28 the latter are provided with removable heads 29 and 3|, and for actuating the plungers a suitable source of fluid pressure not shown is provided and controlled in any well-known manner. 4
To meet the requirements demanded of the brace the brace arm sections 5a and 5b are made sufllciently strong to adequately brace the outer end of the drum shaft 3 and sufficiently long to allow the brace to be moved well out of the way of the largest contemplated coil to be wound upon the reel. for operation about a vertical pivot on the mill side of the reel to thereby most effectively resist the deflection of the drum shaft due to the tensional forces in the strip being woundupon the drum,
'I'he'reason for making the brace 5 in'two parts is to facilitate its movement into and out of operative position, and as will be appreciated, by breaking the brace slightly through the use of an elbow joint its length islessened whereby allowing it to be made with considerable bearing area'and at the same time permitting its being readily'moved from one position to another about its supporting shaft l5.
As'shown bestin Fig. 2,'the main brace arm section 5a of the brace which is attached to the pivot shaft I6 is made the larger -ofthe two and is designedto receive at its outer end the adjacent end of the forearm section 5b,the two parts being held together by an elbow joint employing a hinge pin 32 and limited in their relative breaking movement by shoulders 33 and 34 and 35 and 36, respectively, formed on the abutting ends of the two parts, the shoulders 33 and 34 being disposed to prevent the parts 5a and 5bbreak'ing at all in an outward direction and hence maintaining 'the'brace in a straight line when it in its operative position. The shoulders 35 and 35 on the other hand are inclined away from each other and on a sufiicient angle-to prevent the necessary breaking of thebrace to allowthe outer end thereof to freely clear the" bearing shell [2 when the brace is moved into and ing position. v

outer extremity of this block is cut out to engage a substantial portion of the periphery of the shell and the major part thereof disposed below the axis of. the reel to best support the weight of the reel and resist bending thereof due to the tensional forces of the strip. Through the use 'of this sheath the construction of the brace is facilitated and a design is provided which permits shims being inserted between the sheath and the brace to take up any play which may develop as the block or sheath wears away with use.

1. The combination with a cantilever type reel of a removable brace for the outboard end thereof which is'provided witha hinged Joint intermediate its ends and operable in a direction opposing the forces developed by the pull of the material being coiled on the reel.
2. A winding. reel for coiling wide material comprising a reel drum, a supporting shaft for said drum-mounted at one end a rigidbearing, a removable brace provided with a hinged joint intermediate its ends and disposed-to engage the other end of said shaft and resist the bending thereof by the pull of the material being coiled, and means for moving said brace into and out of engagement withsaid shaft.

A .windingreel forv coilingjstrip material comprising a winding drum, a supporting shaft for said drum, a rigid bearing for supporting one end ofsaid shaft, a removable brace disposed to engage the free end of said shaft and support it against bending by the pull of the stock, and a freely rotatable cap mounted on the outboard end of said shaft for the reception of said brace.

A winding reel for coiling strip material comprising a winding drum, a-supporting shaft onwhich said drum is mounted, a fixed bearing for supporting one end of said shaft, a collapsible brace having a hinged jointintermediate its ends for supporting the outboard end of said shaft from'bending'due tothe forces developed by the pull of the strip being wound on the drum, and means for moving said brace into and out of operative engagement with the shaft.

A, strip winding reel comprising a winding drum, ashaft on which said drum is mounted, a fixed bearing member for supporting one end of shaft, and a pivotally mounted brace for engaging and supporting theother end of said shaft, said brace comprising a supporting section pivotally mounted on a supported pivot shaft,
