Abstract

1335584 Rolling; coiling and uncoiling BLAW-KNOX FOUNDRY & MILL MACHINERY Inc 3 Dec 1971 [4 Dec 1970] 56291/71 Headings B3E and B3M A rolling mill 10 which is suitable for rolling aluminium foil is provided on its entry side with an unwinding assembly 26 for a coil, and on its exit side with a similar winding assembly 26<SP>1</SP>, the two assemblies being operated to maintain the foil in alignment with the mill rolling line 18 during rolling. Each assembly includes a pair of arms 30 between which a coil can be supported, the arms being controlled so that the top of the coil is at all times level with the rolling line 18. In the initial position shown in Fig. 5A, a coil is held between the arms 30 after having been wheeled transversely on a tiltable trolley 150 into alignment with the mill. The end of the coil is threaded through the mill rolls and wound on to a spool on the winding assembly 26<SP>1</SP>. Movable platforms 100 and 100<SP>1</SP> help an operator in the threading operation with the mill now in the position shown in Fig. 1, the arms 30 are raised by rams 50 until their free ends 70 engage nuts 60 carried on spindles 62. During rolling, the spindles are so rotated that the nuts rise to keep the arms 30 and coil at a desired level. Supports 76 hold the ends 70 in engagement with the nuts. The winding assembly 26<SP>1</SP> is similarly controlled, Fig. 5C, so that it is progressively lowered during rolling. When the coil has been unwound from its spool, the spool is passed beneath the mill rolls on rails 110 ready for a subsequent unwinding and rolling operation. Each of the arms 30 is provided at its end with an axially retractable support member for a spool (Fig. 2, not shown), the support members on one side of the mill being rotated through a gear assembly which accommodates pivotal movement of the arms.
