Abstract

1,043,337. Winding and reeling. LEE WILSON ENGINEERING S.A. Aug. 10, 1965 [Feb. 17, 1965], No. 34106/65. Heading B3E. [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for processing and handling coils of strip metal includes a frame member mounted for pivotal movement about a substantially horizontal axis, a pair of oppositely directed mandrels mounted for rotation on said frame member and having their axes extending at 90 degrees to said horizontal axis of said frame member, means for rotating said mandrels about their axes, and means for turning said frame member together with said mandrels as a unit about said horizontal axis of said frame member. A coil 1 of metal strip for processing, e.g. annealing, is lifted from a chain conveyer 2 by a hydraulically actuated platform 7 of a trolley 4. The trolley 4 is then moved towards coiling and uncoiling means 3. The unit 3 is pivotable about a horizontal axis and is in a position with a mandrel 9 carried by the unit extending horizontally. The coil 1 is placed over the horizontal mandrel 9 by the trolley 4, the mandrel is expanded and the unit 3 swung to a position in which the mandrel 4 extends vertically. The strip is then unwound from the mandrel 9 for processing. The unit 3 is then swung a further 90 degrees about its horizontal axis so that a second and larger mandrel 15 extends vertically therefrom. The strip is rewound on to the mandrel 15, the unit 3 is then swung another 90 degrees and the wound coil 1b transferred from the mandrel to a discharge conveyer 29 by a trolley 10. The unit 3 and mandrels 9, 15 are rotated by a motor 16 through differential gearing in the unit 3, hydraulically-actuated clutches allowing independent rotation of the mandrels 9, 15. The unit 3 is held in its adjusted position by hydraulically-actuated pins 49. The unit 3 may alternatively be rotated through gearing independent of the differential gearing rotating the mandrel 9, 15. The mandrels 9, 15 are carried by circular turntables on the unit 3. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 5 (not shown), strip is unwound from a mandrel, when in a horizontal position, to a four-high rolling mill, a single conveyer being provided both to feed the coils to the unit 8 to discharge the rewound coils.
