Apparatus for coiling strip comprises a rotatable mandrel on which the coil is wound, a plurality of wrapper rolls distributed around the mandrel so as to run on the periphery of the coil when the mandrel is rotated, gas pressure means for maintaining pressure between the wrapper rolls and said coil when the rolls are running thereon, and liquid pressure means for moving the rolls rapidly away from the coil. Hot steel strip is fed to a rotated expandable mandrel 1 by pinch rolls 28 through guides defined by fixed plates 11, 12, 13, a roller 14, a plate 15 pivoted about the axis of the roller 14, and a plate 10 carried by an arm 5 on a spindle 6d. The first few turns are urged and guided on the mandrel 1 by rotated wrapper rolls 2a, 2b, 2c, 2d journalled in pairs of arms 5 also carrying deflector plates 9a, 9b, 9c and 9d. The pairs of arms 5 are mounted on spindles 6a, 6b, 6c, 6d, the latter three being connected by arms 21 (not shown) and 22 to piston rods 20x (not shown) and 20y of doubleacting air piston and cylinder assemblies 16 and a single-acting hydraulic piston and cylinder assembly 17. The spindle 6a is connected by arms 26 to the piston rods 25 of double-acting air and oil piston and cylinder assemblies 23 pivoted about fixed axes 24. Alternatively, an air cylinder could act on one of the arms 26 and an oil cylinder on the other arm 26. As the coil on the mandrel 1 expands the rolls 2a, 2b, 2c and 2d are forced radially outwards against air pressure in the cylinders 16 and 23, which pressure may be maintained constant. When the coil has grown to a predetermined size the rolls are withdrawn rapidly by admitting oil under pressure to the cylinders 17 and 23 which movement is assisted by supplying air under pressure to appropriate rolls of the cylinders 16. The plate 15 is linked to the arms 26 and is swung down when the rolls are withdrawn. When a coil has been wound, the lower pinch roll 28 is shifted to direct the strip over rolls 34 to a further and similar coiling apparatus.
