Abstract

867,086. Winding and reeling. UNITED ENGINEERING & FOUNDRY CO. Nov. 26, 1959, No. 40179/59. Class 83 (4). Strip coiling apparatus comprises a reel on which the strip is to be coiled, a plurality of guide-members forming a spaced channel around and adjacent the peripheral surface of the reel through which channel the strip is directed to pass for coiling on the reel, and a plurality of fluid discharge nozzles located around the reel periphery and arranged, when supplied with fluid, to direct fluid under pressure against the strip passing through the channel to force the strip into contact with the reel. Metal strip from pinch rolls 31 is passed between plates 28, 29 and then between a driven reel 11 and a first curved guide 12 closely adjacent the reel periphery. As the leading end of the strip arrives adjacent adjustable nozzles 21 spaced along and around the guide 12, highpressure fluid is expelled from the nozzles to strike the moving strip and force it against the reel 11 to torm a tight first wrap thereon. After sufficient strip has been wound to ensure a tight grip on the reel, the guides 12, together with the nozzle 21, are retracted by fluid pressure cylinders 17. Fluid may continue to be expelled from the nozzles, for cooling, until the coil is completed. Driven or idle rolls 26 may be moved by piston and cylinder means 27 to contact the strip when necessary to force it against the reel. A roll 33 is swung up to support the coil on withdrawal of the guides 12 to their inoperative position.
