Abstract
941,974. Rolling guides. UNITED ENGINEERING & FOUNDRY CO. Jan. 20, 1960 [Jan. 29, 1959], No. 2061/60. Heading B3M. A guide for strip entering a rolling mill which has an upper and a lower platen, the upper platen being adjustable towards and away from the other. The platens are mounted on a frame comprising members 22, 24 and 15 and pivoted about a fixed shaft 11, the frame also being vertically adjustable by jacks 14. The upper platen comprises a holder 29 which accommodates transversely displaceable separate wooden guide boards 35, the platen as a whole being mounted for movement relative to the frame on links 32 and a bell-crank 27. The lower platen comprising members 38a, 38b and transversely adjustable guide boards 39 is fixed to the frame. Transversely-adjustable side guides 44 engage the outermost guide boards 35, 39 and push them transversely and inwardly to suit the size of strip. The upper platen is first raised into a strip-feeding position by cylinders 28 acting on the bell-cranks 27 and, after entry of the strip between the first pair of rolls, the platen is lowered to apply a drag to the strip and so guide it until it reaches the delivery reel. On release of pressure in the cylinder 28 a spring 53 raises the platen to a position determined by a stop 54, so that a restricted passage is defined between the platens to prevent the free end entering the rolls should the strip break.
