1494998 Feeding metal strip I T SMITH 21 Jan 1975 [30 Nov 1973] 55613/73 Heading B8R Strip feed apparatus comprises a transporter element including means for engaging strip at a first position and holding it while the element is guided to a second position at which the stripengaging means are released and tensioning means on the entry side of strip-engaging means to restrain the strip relative to the transporter element. As shown, a device for feeding strips from a slitter (not shown) to a coiling device 10a comprises a carriage 13 reciprocable along tracks 11 and carrying a strip clamp 31. With the carriage in its furthest left position, as viewed in Fig. 1, strips are passed, from loops formed after they leave the slitter, over rolls 16 and a vertically movable roll 17 which carries discs (19) separating the strips. Inclined guides 47 lead to and from tensioning rolls 24a, 24b and a roll 26 guides the strips when the coil is almost complete. Strips are initially fed by the tensioning rolls 24a, 24b or by other means (not specified) over plates 27 and 34 until each strip abuts a gauging stop 39 when a clamp 31 is actuated by a fluid cylinder 38 to grip the strips between faces 32 and the plates 34 fore and aft of a roller 29 similar to roller 17. Arms 42 carrying the stop 39 are pivoted by cylinders 44 to the broken line position and the carriage is moved to the right to introduce the strips tensioned by rolls 24a, 24b into the gripping means (not shown) of the coiling device 10a. The clamp 31 is moved to the broken line position and the carriage is moved back to its furthest left position and is locked there by a piston 46. The tensioning rolls are covered by elastomeric material slit to form squares in the surface and are acted on by brakes 48-51. Alternative tensioning means are fluid-operated pressure pads, magnetic or electromagnetic devices or fluid blasted directly on to the strips.
