In apparatus for coiling hot strip metal a plurality of guide rolls and guide plates attached to frames form a substantially continuous channel round the reel for guiding the end of the strip. The strip S, Fig. 1, from a rolling mill is fed by pinch rolls 12 through a chute 13 and throat guide 14 to the periphery of the reel 16 and is engaged by a pair of driven rolls 17 which urge it under a pair of curved or spiral guides 18, 19 which partially encircle the reel 16. A further pair of driven rolls 21 engage the strip as it leaves the guides 18, 19 and urges it beneath the oncoming strip being coiled. The guides 18, 19 are mounted on frames 31 arranged to be withdrawn away from the rail as soon as the coil is partially formed by means comprising a photo-electric cell 65 and light source 66 in the shoot 13 which detect the entry of the strip S and actuate solenoid valves in a hydraulic system for withdrawing the frames after a preset time delay. The frames 31 are mounted on bell cranks 32 and arms 37 pivoted on shafts 34, 38 between side frames 11 and are yieldingly held in position by double-acting hydraulic piston and cylinder assemblies 35, 36 connected to the bell crank and actuated to withdraw the guides under control of the photo-electric cell 65. Similarly mounted frames 22, 48 carry the driven rolls 17, 21 and curved deflectors 57 between the rolls. A curved deflector 14b on the frame 48 substantially encloses the remaining portion of the periphery of the reel 16. The guides 18, 19 and deflectors 57 may all comprise readily removable segments slidably engaged on the frames and retained in position by keepers not shown). In a modification one of each of the rollers 17, 22 is replaced by additional curved or spiral guides comprising a number of segments slidably engaged on the frames 22.
