Abstract
1,117,722. Scouring pads. C. J. DEMRICK. 14 Dec., 1966, No. 56044/66. Heading A4R. A scouring pad 14 comprises a steel wool ribbon 24 wound around a soap core 38 with additional soap layers 18 disposed between adjacent layers of the steel wool, the pad has a compressed periphery (62). In making the pads 14 steel wool 12 is drawn from a roll 12 by intermittently rotated gears 26, 28 past a soap spray 16 and through a ribbon inverting station 20. Alternatively the steel wool 12 is sprayed on both surfaces and the inverting station 20 is omitted. Continuously driven gears 32, 34 tear off predetermined lengths of ribbon 24 and advance them beneath a nozzle 36 which deposits a soap core 38 on the leading end of the ribbon 24. The ribbon 24 is then carried through a winding station 40 on an endless belt 44. A flexible vane 48 rolls back the leading end of the ribbon 24 which subsequently engages a stationary guide 50 to continue the roll 42. The roll 42 falls into a die 54 to be peripherally compressed between press members 56, 56<SP>1</SP> prior to discharge on to a belt 60.
