Abstract

764,670. Winding and reeling. MORGAN CONSTRUCTION CO. Feb. 21, 1955 [March 5, 1954; April 14, 1954; June 11, 1954], No. 5076/55. Class 83 (4). Apparatus for coiling hot metal rod includes a reel and a cover for the reel and is characterized by the provision of an air cooling conduit extending into the cover and of means for removing said cover and conduit from the reel to permit the removal of the coiled product therefrom. Steel rod from a hot rolling mill is led into a reel housing 13 through an opening 52 therein to coil, on a loose plate 38, between inner and outer rows of pins 40, 41 upstanding from a rotated plate 42. Cooling air is blown by a fan 20, down a duct 21, which telescopes into a duct 28 secured to a lid 24 resting on the housing 13, through the duct 28 and an aperture 27 in the lid 24 on to the coiling rod. The air passes out through slits 50, 51 in the wall of the housing 13 the slits being inclined oppositely to the direction of rotation of the pins. The slits of upper row 51 may be smaller than those of the lower row 50. When the rod has been coiled a shaft 49 lifts the plate 38 up over the pins 40, 41 to the level of the top of the housing 13 at the same time as hydraulic cylinders 32 lift the lid 24 and duct 28. A pusher then pushes the coil off the plate 38 on to a conveyer. In another embodiment, Figs. 4, 5, 6, a lower part 118 of the telescopic cooling air supply duct extends through, and is carried by, a domed cover 135 resting on a reel housing 117. Air passes down the duct, over a conical diffuser 134 secured to its lower end, up around the coils and out through pockets 138, 139 of the housing to a conduit 140. The lid 135 is raised by chains 130 running over driven pinions. A pusher 143 running over a roll 142 on the housing 117 pushes the coil off a plate 148 when the latter is raised and the lid is lifted. In a further embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown), a telescopic cooling air supply conduit extends down through the reel housing lid and air passes out of the housing through apertures in the lid to a telescopic conduit surrounding the supply conduit. Specification 706,545 is referred to.
