Abstract
958,954. Article engaging devices. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Sept. 30, 1960 [Oct. 6, 1959], No. 33830/59. Heading B8H. [Also in Division G6] A grab for use in the fuel channels of a nuclear reactor comprises a cylindrical body 14 attached to a hoist cable 16 and adapted to receive the component 10 to be lifted, the component having an adapter 11 provided with a rim 12 engageable by hooks 17 pivoted to a lower end flange 18 of the body 14. The arrangement is such that as the grab is lowered over the component the hooks 17 ride over the rim 12 and then swing back so that when the grab is subsequently raised they lift the component. A sleeve 22 surrounding the body 14 and normally resting on the flange 18 carries a number of pivoted lugs 27, each lug having a hole 30 receiving a nose 21 on a respective hook 17. An upper flange 23 on the sleeve 22 carries the plungers 25 of a plurality of solenoids 26 attached to the body 14 whereby the hooks 17 may be moved to the disengaged position by energizing the solenoids to lift the sleeve, Fig. 5, this operation being performed after lowering the component on to a support.
