Abstract

891,806. Producing neutrons; handling devices for use in nuclear reactors. A.E.I.-J. THOMPSON NUCLEAR ENERGY CO. Ltd. Aug. 31, 1960 [Sept. 21, 1959], No. 32091/59. Class 39(4) A neutron source comprises concentric tubular members of materials which when placed in juxtaposition react to emit neutrons, which members are located in a portable contamer with. means for removing one of the members from the container leaving the other member behind when it is necessary to lift the neutron source out of the equipment in which it operates. Fig. 1 shows a neutron source suitable for lowering into a nuclear reactor and comprising a rectangular container 1 provided with a lifting loop 9; a beryllium tube 2 enclosed in a can 3 rests on a support bracket 4 carried by ribs attached to pillars secured to the container 1. An antimony tube 10 enclosed in a can is arranged inside the beryllium tube and a lifting rod 12 extends through the middle of the tube 10 and at its lower end is provided with a bayonet slot which is engaged by pins extending inwardly from the annular wall of support member 4. The top end of the rod 12 is secured to a support member 13 provided with lugs between which extends a lifting bar 15; the support member rests on a spring which normally holds together the bayonet joint at the lower end of rod 12 and which allows the initial downward movement necessary to disengage the joint. Fig. 8 shows hoisting apparatus for removing the antimony tube. An annular block 20 carries spaced U members 21, 22 which overlie the lifting loop 9 (Fig. 1) and is provided with a lifting member 23 by which it can be raised and with a pulley 24. A hook 25 engages the lifting bar 15 and this hook has a rectangular extension which slides centrally in a control member 26 consisting of a sleeve provided with helical grooves 27. The head of control member 26 is provided with a groove 29 into which extend lifting pins 30 carried on an outer sleeve 31. When the head 32 is raised by means of the cable passing over pulley 24 the control member 26 is raised by pins 30; at the same time the control member 26 is rotated by the action of pins 34, attached to inner sleeve 35, engaging the helical grooves 27.
