Abstract

907,246. Fuel elements. PARSONS & CO. Ltd., C. A. Feb. 18, 1960 [March 6, 1959], No. 7809/59. Class 39 (4). Fuel elements are coupled end-to-end to form a string by a flexible cable 9, e.g. of stainless steel, whereby the elements may move out of alignment with each other when a string is lifted out of a reactor core through an angled loading shoot. As shown, the lower end of an upper fuel element has a conical fitting 5a which normally seats within a recess in a fitting 5b provided at the upper end of a lower fuel element, the two elements normally being in axial alignment. The lower end of the cable 9 is secured to the fitting 5b by a washer 16 whereas the upper end carries a collar 13 slidable in a space 12 in the fitting 5a, the collar being arrested by a shoulder 14 when a lifting effort is applied to the upper fuel element whereby the effort is transmitted to the lower element.
