A nuclear fuel element assembly for use in a vertical fuel channel comprises a central pillar 3, a bracket 13<SP>1</SP>, fuel rods suspended from the bracket, and an annular spacer 7<SP>1</SP> attached to the lower ends of the fuel rods and supported solely by the rods. Successive element assemblies overlap by passing the top of one inside the spacer of the next.
