Abstract
958,178. Fog-projecting fire-extinguishers. A. JACOBS. Oct. 17, 1962 [April 17, 1962], No. 39227/62. Heading A5A. [Also in Divisions B2 and F1] A fire-extinguisher which projects a cooling and smothering fog comprised essentially of a non-flammable liquid and gas comprises a tank 11 holding liquified compressed gas, e.g. CO 2 , from which gas may pass via a manual control valve 12 and a pulsating valve 14, which allows an intermittent gas flow, to a conduit and to the discharge gun 30 where some of the gas passes into the forwardly extending tube 36 which terminates in a multi-ported outlet 37 disposed centrally in a wider passage 52 into which a non-flammable liquid is fed from a tank 62 via a hose 48 and a conduit 51 in the gun. The remainder of the gas passes through a passage 54 in the gun to a tube 49 concentric with the liquid supply hose into the liquid tank 62 and into the gas-operated liquid flow control means comprising a valve body 94 into which gas enters at the upper end 96 thereof and act on a plunger piston 98 provided with sealing rings 105 and 106 and which is resiliently biased upwards and which, in its upper position, blocks the orifices 108 communicating with the interior of the tank. The gas urges the piston downwards allowing gas to pass into and thus pressurize the tank (via orifices 108) and at the same time causes the valve closure member 114 to leave its seating 120 and allow liquid to pass up the tube 124 from near the bottom of the tank into the tube 80 and thence to the hose 48 and discharge gun where it mixes with the gas issuing from the nozzle 37 to form the fog. In an alternative arrangement indicated by Fig. 3 (not shown), the liquid control valve is not present, the gas passing directly into the tank 62. The gas-supply nozzle of the discharge gun shown in Fig. 2 comprises an entry conduit 35 communicating with the exit conduit 38 which terminates in a plurality of discharge ports 39, 40 and 41, the latter two (of a total of 4 such ports) being disposed at angles of about 30 degrees to the port 39 and the axis of the exit conduit. Suitable liquids for use in the apparatus are water and water containing up to 50% of a flammable material, e.g. methyl alcohol or a material which produces hydrogen at fire temperatures, the presence of which is stated to improve the fire-extinguishing results of the apparatus.
