In an apparatus for cleansing teeth or other parts of the body, a stream of liquid containing nascent carbon dioxide is produced. In the simple embodiment shown in Fig. 1, air is compressed by a pump 5 into a storage tank 4. It is then led to a cock 24, which is divided into three parts, so that air flows from pipe 23 to pipes 26, 27 simultaneously. Pressure is accordingly introduced into cups 19, 20 which hold tartaric or citric acid and sodium bicarbonate solutions respectively. The liquids are consequently forced up tubes 28, 29 through the main cock 24 and individual control valves 47, 48 to jets 51, 52 in the hand piece 35 where they separately mix with air coming from pipe 26 and subsequently pass through nozzles 38, 39, by means of which they are brought together immediately before passing through the outlet nozzle 41. The nozzle 41 may carry a brush 42 and, for convenience, the control valves 47, 48 may be built into the hand piece. In a modified form'of hand' piece, see Fig. 11 (not shown) the liquids and air supply are led to a conical nosepiece in the surface of which the jets are formed as grooves, their effective cross-sectional areas being determined by a conical, surrounding sleeve, the axial position of which may be varied as required.
