Abstract

<PICT:0681982/III/1> <PICT:0681982/III/2> A spatter finish coating is produced by propelling through an orifice a stream composed of a plurality of incompletely mixed different liquids, forming the stream into droplets and impinging them against a surface. The liquids may differ in viscosity or in composition or both. Usually the spatter liquid has a higher viscosity than that forming in the background. The liquids are contained in hermetically sealed receptacles 7, 8, Fig. 1, into which air under pressure is introduced through pipe 14, reducing valve 13 and branch pipe 12. The receptacles are connected by flexible conduits 54, 61 to a head 51, valves 56, 63 serving to regulate the flow of the liquids. The spray gun, Fig. 4, is conventional except that the receiving chamber 41 is provided at the rear end with a passage 48 connected to the head 51 thence to conduit 54. A tube 57 within the passage 48 opens at its upper end into chamber 41 and at its lower end into head 51 and thence to conduit 61. The air pressure delivered to the gun through conduit 21, Fig. 1, should be one-third greater than that delivered to receptacles 7, 8. In use, operating the trigger 19 opens air valve 25, causing discharge of converging jets of compressed air through orifices 35, 37, 38, 39, and simultaneously opens valve 44 to discharge through orifice 43 the composite stream of liquid which is broken up by the air jets into droplets of various sizes.
