Abstract

A paving or binder composition capable of being coloured comprises 92.5-99.5 parts of an extract obtained from a lubricating oil and having an aromatic hydrogen content of at least 55% and a viscosity at 98.9 DEG C. of 100-3,000 SSU and 0.5-7.5 parts of a hydrocarbon polymer having an average molecular weight of 5x104-107. The polymer may be natural rubber; neoprene, polyisoprene, polybutadiene, polychloroprene, chlorosulphonated polyethylene; or ethylenepropylene, isobutylene-isoprene, or styrene-butadiene co-polymer. The polymer may be incorporated as a solution or dispersion. A dispersion may contain 50-70% of solid. A paving composition may consist of 3-10% of binder composition, 1-10% of pigment or dye, and at least 80% of a mineral aggregate. It is preferably produced by adding the extract to aggregate heated to 120-280 DEG C. and then adding a dispersion of the polymer followed by pigment.
