Abstract

A composition suitable as a binder in road making comprises a petroleum distillate fraction with a viscosity of 100-250 S.S.U. at 210 DEG F., 5% to 20% by weight of butyl rubber and 40% to 60% by weight of a thickening agent. The petroleum distillate may be an oil such as an aromatic extract obtained by solvent extraction of lubricating oil e.g. phenol extract, but liquid sulphur dioxide, chlorex, furfural, liquid sulphur dioxide/benzene or nitrobenzene extracts may also be used. The butyl rubber is a copolymer containing 70%-99,5% of an iso-olefine containing 4-7 carbon atoms per molecule and 30%-0,5% of a conjugated multi olefine containing 4-10 carbon atoms per molecule. The thickening agents are petroleum resins, wood rosin and limed rosin and calcium salts of naphthenic acid.
