Abstract

A composition useful for consolidating fibres or particles (e.g. of sand or soil) comprises (a) a polyepoxide, (b) a phenol, (c) a low viscosity aromatic petroleum distillate or a low viscosity aromatic extract of a petroleum distillate, such that the composition has a maximum viscosity of about 300 centipoises at ambient temperature, and (d) an adduct of a polyepoxide curing agent and a carboxylic acid. Long lists of suitable compounds are given of which the following are preferred:-(a) polyepoxides from an epihalohydrin and bisphenol A or glycerol; (b) cresylic acids and alkyl substituted phenols; (c) furfural extract of heavy catalytically cracked cycle oil, kerosine extract containing about 74% by weight of aromatic compounds, low viscosity aromatic extract of a lubricating oil,, and light catalytically cracked cycle oil; and (d) adducts derived from N-2-aminoethyl piperazine or diethylene triamine, and colophony or naphthenic acids. Uses: Coating; consolidating paper or textile fibres; and consolidating sand or soil particles, when the composition may be mixed or injected into the wet or dry sand or soil, either under gravity or under pressure. Specifications 639,551, 860,287 and 950,298 are referred to.
