Abstract

Coating or impregnating compositions of the kinds described in Specification 349,988 consisting of aqueous emulsions of a glyptal resin and a rapid thermo-hardening resin such as a urea- or phenolformaldehyde resin are prepared without previous combination of the two resins. A solution in a mixture of solvent naphtha and butyl alcohol to which oleic acid is added, of a glyptal resin prepared by heating glycerine, phthalic anhydride and castor oil is stirred to form an emulsion with either a urea-formaldehyde resin prepared from urea and formaldehyde using boric acid as a catalyst and mixed with water containing ammonia or with a solution or dispersion in water containing ammonia and casein of dimethylol urea or phenol formaldehyde resole. Alternatively, a glyptal resin containing linseed oil is emulsified with water, oleic acid and ammonia, and urea-formaldehyde resin prepared by refluxing dimethylolurea with formaldehyde is mixed with the emulsion.
