Abstract

Coating or impregnating compositions consist of aqueous emulsions of resins of the polyhydricalcohol-polybasic acid type, and of rubber or rubber-like substances such as balata, guttapercha or synthetic rubbers. The emulsions may be prepared with the aid of emulsifying agents such as the product described in Specification 8245/07, [Class 2, Acids and salts, Organic &c.]. Colloidal clay such as bentonite may be added. The emulsion of resin may be formed by dissolving the resin in an organic solvent such as solvent naphtha, butyl alcohol, &c. and mixing the solution in water. A suitable resin is obtained by heating together phthalic anhydride, glycerol and castor oil at 190-200 DEG C. while passing on inert gas such as nitrogen or carbon dioxide. The resin may be mixed with a urea-formaldehyde condensation product of the same resin formed by heating part of the resin with glycol monoethy ether and dimethylol urea.
