Abstract

An aqueous emulsion, suitable for use as a coating composition, comprises an aqueous solution or dispersion of a phenolic resin admixed with an aqueous emulsion of pine wood pitch, sold as "Vinsol." The pine wood pitch comprises a residue low in abietic acid remaining after the separation of refined resin high in abietic acid from resinous material obtained by extraction of pine wood with a solvent and is characterised by its insolubility in cold petroleum hydrocarbons, it may be used in ammoniacal solution or after modification by condensation with formaldehyde. The emulsion may be used to impregnate glass wool, asbestos, rock wool, paper, pulp. A solution of casein, ammonia and water is heated for 30 mins. with the extracted pine wood pitch and to the paste thus formed are added 10 parts water-soluble phenol-aldehyde condensate in 10 parts ammonia. The diluted varnish is sprayed on to glass wool which is then dried at 110 DEG C.; (2) 100 parts pine wood pitch reacted with 5 parts paraformaldehyde and the product mixed with 90 parts phenol-aldehyde resin. The product was added to an emulsion comprising 50 parts casein, 100 parts 28 per cent ammonia, 200 parts water and 1000 parts pine wood pitch. The phenol-aldehyde condensates may be prepared from (a) phenol, cresol, xylenol, 2,2-bishydroxy propane and (b) formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, furfural. An emulsion of pine wood pitch prepared as described in Specification 582,986, [Group III], may be used. Specification 594,759, [Group V], also is referred to.
