Abstract

507,769. Synthetic resin coating- compositions. BAKELITE, Ltd. Dec. 20, 1937, No. 35288. Convention date, Dec. 22, 1936. [Class 2 (iii)] A coating-composition capable of giving oil and grease resistant films comprises a blown and/or polymerized oil, a heat-convertible synthetic resin and a non-heat-convertible synthetic or natural' resin. The composition is preferably applied hot, but it may be used diluted with a solvent. Suitable oils include fish oils, linseed, soya bean, rape seed, castor, and perilla oils. Heat convertible resins are preferably oil soluble resins 'such as those obtained by condensing high boiling tar acids, cresol,. xylenols, amyl-phenols, butylphenols and phenyl-phenols with aldehydes; other heat hardenable resins such as novolaks (together with a hardening agent such as hexamethylenetetramine) or alkyd resins may be employed. Non-heat-convertible resins include oxidized abietic acid, coumarone and indene resins and novolaks. In examples compositions are prepared containing (1) a condensate of tar acids and formaldehyde prepared in the presence of ammonia, blown fish oil and oxidized abietic acid, the blend being aftertreated with paraformaldehyde or the initial oxidized abietic acid and blown oil being treated with glycerin if desired; (3) a condensate of p-amyl phenol and formaldehyde prepared in presence of caustic soda, blown castor oil, blown fish oil, and oxidized abietic acid; (4) a condensate of p-phenylphenol and formaldehyde prepared in the presence of an acid catalyst, hexamethylene tetramine, cumar resin and blown fish oil; (5) condensates of tar acids and formaldehyde prepared in the presence of ammonia, and oxalic acid respectively and blown linseed oil; (8) a glycerolphthalic anhydride condensate, blown fish oil, oxidized abietic acid and a condensate of tar acids and formalin prepared in the presence of ammonia; (10) the composition of example 2 (similar to that in example 1) is diluted with toluene and mixed with titanium and zinc oxide. The compositions may be used to coat paper, cardboard, pulp board, cloth, canvas, asbestos and the coated material used to manufacture containers, boxes, cartons, pails, oilproof, and chemical resistant containers.
