Abstract
A coating composition comprises a solution in a compatible solvent incorporating an epoxy resin having an epoxy equivalence greater than 1, a curing agent for said epoxy resin, a petroleum residue having a precipitation index from 20 to 40 and from 5 to 20% by weight based on the total weight of resin and residue of methyl abietate or dihydromethyl abietate as blending agent. In an embodiment of the invention, the composition also contains from 6 to 30% by weight based on the total weight of solvent forming the solution of ethylene glycol monomethyl ether. Specified polyepoxides are the glycidyl ethers of polyhydric phenols and alcohols. Specified solvents are ether alcohols and esters thereof. The examples disclose compositions comprising an epoxy resin, a polyamide, petroleum residue, xylol, tris (dimethylaminomethyl) phenol, methyl isobutyl ketone, dihydromethyl abietate and:-(1) aluminium silicate and the monoethyl ether of ethylene glycol; (2) aluminium silicate and the monomethyl ether of ethylene glycol and (3) to (5) colloidal silica, calcium silicate, the monoethyl ether of ethylene glycol and toluol.
